When you book a stay at our Honolulu Hotel, you probably have some very definite ideas about how you want to spend your time. For some, that means lounging on the beach with a cold drink and a good book. For others, it means taking part in as many Oahu Things to Do as time will allow. Whether you want a relaxed vacation or an adventure-laden Island escape, Hiking Diamond Head crater can fit nicely into your plans.

Because the hike to the summit of Diamond Head Crater is not terribly long, you can take part in this Oahu Activity and then get back to the beach or move onto your next exploit. The average time to hike to the summit is just 2 hours, but those who are fit can easily do the hike in about half an hour.

While not terribly challenging, some visitors might find the hike to the top a little strenuous, so some hikers do have to take their time reaching the top. You’ll begin your trek to the top on a trail that takes you up the side of the crater. You’ll reach a set of 74 steps then go through a tunnel. After that you’ll reach another, fairly steep, set of 99 stairs. So while you don’t need to be an athlete or expert climber to enjoy this Oahu Thing to Do, keep in mind the steep portions of the trail and the many steps make it more difficult than a leisurely stroll.

Once at the summit, however, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views that make it all worth it. If you’re lucky enough to make the hike between December and April, you may even see Humpback Whales frolicking in the distance.

In addition to the beautiful views, hikers will also find a bit of history at the summit of Diamond Head. A lighthouse, built in 1917, and some old bunkers remain on Diamond Head Crater adding to the reasons why this Oahu Thing to Do is a must during your stay at our Honolulu Hotel.

The crater itself has a much longer history. It was formed between 200,000 and 300,000 years ago during a volcanic explosion. Today, it is one of the most recognizable features of Oahu. If you’re not up for a hike, there is another way to get a great view of Diamond Head Crater: a helicopter ride! You’ll get a birds-eye-view of this Oahu Attraction.

This Oahu Activity is perfect for a family adventure, and it is sure to be one of the highlights of your stay at our ideally-located Honolulu Hotel. Whether visitors hike to the top or enjoy seeing Diamond Head from the sky, this Oahu Attraction is one of the Island’s most popular.
