About Waimea Bay:
A mecca for surfers, Waimea Bay is the place where big wave surfing first burst onto the scene in the 1950’s. A group of surfers caught a massive swell here in 1957, and they forever changed the world of surfing. Courtyard by Marriott Waikiki Beach is located near many gorgeous beaches. Take a short drive to enjoy this well-known Oahu Beach during your next stay at our Honolulu Hotel.
Some of surfing’s top competitions are held here each year, and some of the best surfers in the world come to Waimea Bay to participate. One contest, Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau, has only taken place 8 times in the past 25 years. That is because this competition is only held during exceptionally large swells.
While the huge waves are heaven to experienced surfers, they can prove to be a danger to novice surfers and to swimmers. The waves are biggest during the winter months, so swimming is not advised. In the summer, the waves tend to be much smaller. During the summer, the water is often suitable for swimming or for intermediate surfers.
Even non-surfers enjoy spending time at this Oahu Beach. Watching the surfers or taking in the breathtaking views make a visit to Waimea Bay well worth the effort. Onsite parking and restrooms are available. Lifeguards are on duty during certain hours.
